A legal process with real people
The video call is how you attend. Your license, consent, officiant and witnesses are what give the ceremony its legal foundation.
An authorized officiant
Your officiant is the person legally allowed to perform your marriage. They must be physically in the issuing state during the ceremony, even when you join from elsewhere.
Your consent and two witnesses
You each freely agree to marry. Two witnesses, both at least 18, observe your declarations and the officiant’s pronouncement. Everyone must be able to see and hear one another live.
The required filing
After the ceremony, your officiant submits the marriage details to the clerk’s office. This records the completed ceremony and starts the certificate process.

What about recognition beyond the ceremony?
A valid marriage and the requirements for a particular application are related, but they are different questions.
For use in the United States
Federal law generally recognizes a marriage between two people when it is valid in the state where it was entered into. A benefit or application can still have its own evidence and eligibility requirements.
For use in another country
Countries set their own rules for recognizing marriages and accepting documents. A marriage performed by video may not be accepted where you live. Confirm the requirements with the office handling your registration or application.
Planning a U.S. spousal visa application?
If you are not physically together during the ceremony, U.S. immigration rules generally require the marriage to be consummated afterward before you qualify as spouses for visa purposes. A certificate alone does not guarantee visa eligibility. A qualified immigration lawyer can explain how the rule applies to your plans.

What does an apostille do?
An apostille verifies an official signature, stamp or seal on a document for use abroad. It is a document check, rather than a new marriage ceremony.
- Your receiving office can tell you whether an apostille is needed.
- Some destinations require a different authentication route.
- An apostille does not decide whether the marriage is recognized.

Yes. You can join from the same room or separate locations. Both partners, the officiant and both witnesses must be able to see and hear one another during the live ceremony.
Do we need witnesses?
Yes, two witnesses who are each at least 18. Both of our ceremony packages include witnesses if you need them. Let the team know before your appointment.
Do we have to travel to the issuing state?
You can apply and participate remotely without visiting the clerk’s office. The process does not require state residency or U.S. citizenship. You still need to meet the marriage and identification requirements.
Is applying for the license the same as getting married?
No. The license allows the ceremony to take place. You still need to participate in the ceremony, and your officiant must submit the required paperwork afterward.
Is the ceremony recording our legal proof of marriage?
Your marriage certificate is the official record. The recording is something you can keep from the day; it does not replace the certificate.
Will an apostille make our marriage accepted everywhere?
No. An apostille verifies the document’s official signature or seal. The country or office receiving it applies its own rules about recognizing the marriage.
