One decision at a time
A venue, travel plans and a guest list take time to arrange. Your legal ceremony can happen before the larger gathering, so you can move forward with marriage and give the celebration its own space.
Join your live ceremony from the same room or separate places. You don’t have to coordinate everyone’s travel for the day you get married.
Plan the party, dinner or family gathering around the dates and budget that suit you.
Share the ceremony with your witnesses and ask about inviting a few guests. You can decide how to share the news afterward.
Give each occasion its own place
Your first gathering might be a quiet meal after the ceremony. The later one might be a garden dinner, a reception or a visit with family you have not been able to see.
Separating the dates gives you room to decide what you want from the celebration. You can plan the guest list, travel and atmosphere around the people you hope to include.
Decide together how you will mark the legal wedding day and what you want to share at the later event. You might exchange vows again, invite loved ones to speak or simply enjoy being together.

Two dates with different jobs
Your ceremony date is your legal wedding date. Keep that date available for records that ask when you married. A later celebration can mark the occasion without repeating the legal process.
| Decision | Your legal ceremony | Your later celebration |
|---|---|---|
| Who takes part | Both partners, the officiant and two adult witnesses, with any invited guests. | The people you choose to invite to the gathering. |
| What to arrange | Your account preparation, issued license, ceremony date and live video connection. | The setting, invitations, travel, meal and any activities you want. |
| What the date means | The day the marriage ceremony takes place. | A separate occasion to celebrate the marriage. |
| What to budget | The ceremony package, separate license fee and any other applicable costs. | The celebration expenses you decide to add. |
Include both occasions when looking at your overall budget. Moving a celebration to another date changes when you spend, but it does not automatically remove those costs.
Compare your wedding budget ↗Let people know what to expect
Let guests know that you will already be married when the later event takes place. You can still make the invitation warm and celebratory.
