Understand the ceremony

What is a civil marriage?

A civil marriage is a legal marriage performed by an authorized officiant rather than a religious ceremony. You complete the license, ceremony and filing requirements without needing a religious wedding.

Online describes how you attend. Civil describes the kind of ceremony. Your wedding takes place live on Zoom with your partner, officiant and witnesses.

No ceremony venue to arrange

Join from home or another suitable setting with a reliable internet connection.

An officiant leads the ceremony

You take part live while the officiant guides you through the required declarations.

A certificate after filing

After the marriage is completed and filed, the official certificate process begins.

Three parts, one marriage

Your application, ceremony and certificate each have a purpose

Completing an online form is preparation for the wedding. You become married through the required ceremony, followed by filing of the marriage record.

That distinction helps you know which step you’re on and which document you’re looking for.

Before the ceremony

Your license allows the marriage ceremony to take place. Follow the instructions in your account, complete the application and identity checks, then upload the issued license.

During the ceremony

You and your partner participate live, freely declare your intent to marry and take part with an authorized officiant and witnesses. The officiant guides the legal ceremony.

After the ceremony

The required filing is completed and your certificate is issued through the official process. Keep your marriage certificate with your important records.

A civil wedding in real life

Choose the setting around the people who need to be there

Deciding what fits

A civil wedding and a celebration can have different dates

You may want the legal step now and a larger gathering later. Or a simple ceremony may be the complete wedding you want. Neither requires you to arrange a venue for our online ceremony.
