Two different ways to plan
Residency changes where a local Georgia couple applies
Georgia’s official guidance says that if at least one applicant is a Georgia resident, the couple may obtain a marriage license through any Georgia probate court. If neither person is a resident, they must obtain it where their Georgia ceremony will take place. That difference matters for destination celebrations and couples living on opposite sides of a state line.
Both partners must be present to obtain the local license. Georgia also asks applicants to prepare proof of age and any applicable divorce documentation. An online form or early inquiry should not be mistaken for completion of that appearance step. Plan the application appointment and the ceremony together if you are following the Georgia route.
After a local ceremony, the signed license should be returned within 30 days. The marriage certificate comes after the marriage information is filed; it is not simply the original application receipt. Our service uses a different licensing and recording process, so Georgia’s location and return instructions do not describe the remote documents in your account.

For the weeks after the ceremony, list the organizations that will ask for proof of marriage. A benefits department, a name-change application and an overseas authority may ask for different things. Keep your record’s issuing jurisdiction with your certificate so you know where to request future copies, even if your home remains in Georgia.

The $399 package includes the ceremony. The $899 package adds apostille authentication for your marriage certificate. Both have a separate government marriage license fee. An apostille authenticates a document; it does not guarantee acceptance.

These details apply to a marriage license issued through the Georgia local process. They are state-specific planning points, not requirements for the separate license used for our ceremony.

- If at least one applicant resides in Georgia they can obtain the license in any Georgia county; if neither resides there, apply where ceremony will occur.
- Signed license should be returned within 30 days after ceremony.
