Choosing between them affects more than whether you fill out a form online. It changes which instructions, dates and documents you should follow. This guide helps you keep those paths separate, especially when work, distance or a later celebration makes a traditional appointment difficult to arrange.

Two different ways to plan
The Illinois license has a defined window
For a ceremony under an Illinois license, the normal effective date is one day after the license is issued. The license expires 60 days after it becomes effective. These are rules for the Illinois route, not a timetable for our online ceremony service. A court can order an exception to the normal effective date, but that is not something to assume will happen for your plans.
The issuing location matters as well as the date. Illinois law makes the license effective in the county where it was issued, with a specific exception for an inadvertent ceremony elsewhere in Illinois. Do not make an intentional venue change on the assumption that this exception is permission to use any Illinois license anywhere. Confirm the correct local process before arranging a ceremony under that license.
An online application, an email confirmation and a booked ceremony are different steps. If you choose our remote service, use the license instructions provided for that service instead of independently obtaining an Illinois license and expecting it to work in the same ceremony. If you already have a license, follow the portal guidance before starting another application or paying for another document.

Keep the legal ceremony and the celebration organized
You can plan a family gathering in Illinois separately from the legal ceremony. Be clear with any venue, celebrant or photographer about whether that gathering includes the legal marriage or is a celebration after you are already married. That avoids two providers preparing different legal paperwork for what you thought was one event.
Write down the date you hope to marry, where each partner will join from and the reason you need a certificate. If an employer, insurer or another organization has a deadline, ask what document it needs and when. Allow time for the completed record to be issued and delivered. A ceremony booking is not the same as having a certified certificate ready to hand over.

Choose an available appointment after the required preparation. You and your partner join by video with an officiant and two adult witnesses. We can provide the witnesses, or you can bring your own.
Choose document support
The $399 package includes the ceremony. The $899 package adds apostille authentication for your marriage certificate. Both have a separate government marriage license fee. An apostille authenticates a document; it does not guarantee acceptance.

These details apply to a marriage license issued through the Illinois local process. They are state-specific planning points, not requirements for the separate license used for our ceremony.

Will our ceremony be recorded in Illinois?

Can we use a local clerk near Chicago, Aurora instead?
