Two different ways to plan
Alabama has a certificate-based route
Alabama does not use the usual sequence of applying for a marriage license and then having an officiant complete it. Under its current process, the couple completes an Alabama Marriage Certificate, signs it before a notary and submits it for recording. A ceremony can be part of your plans, but the state does not require one for that route.
The recording deadline matters. The completed form must be delivered within 30 days of the later of the two spouses’ signatures. If you sign on different days, the later date controls that deadline. A form sitting in the mail is not the same as a form delivered for recording, so allow room for delivery and handling.
An online form is not the same as an electronically signed marriage. Alabama’s current instructions do not accept electronic signatures on this certificate. This is an important distinction if you were hoping to complete the state’s paperwork entirely on a phone. The Alabama certificate route and our officiant-led online ceremony use different documents and should not be combined.

If you choose our service, use the license instructions in your account rather than preparing an Alabama Marriage Certificate for the online officiant. Keep both partners’ legal names consistent with identification. Ask questions about previous marriages or a recently issued divorce before selecting a date, especially if your existing court paperwork includes restrictions.
After your ceremony, keep the official certificate with your other important records. The place that records the marriage is also the starting point for replacement copies. An Alabama records search will not substitute for requesting a record from the jurisdiction that actually recorded your online ceremony.
