Planning your marriage from Louisiana

Online marriage in Louisiana: get legally married from home

Louisiana wedding planning can involve both a waiting period and a document checklist that deserves attention before a date is fixed. If you are considering a live online ceremony instead, make sure you understand which legal route you are following. Legal Online Marriage is separate from applying for a Louisiana-issued license. This guide helps you compare the practical decisions without suggesting that an online form, a local license and a video ceremony can simply be combined into one process.

Two different ways to plan

Louisiana’s local route has its own document and date rules

For a ceremony under Louisiana's process, official health guidance describes a 24-hour wait between license issuance and the ceremony. It also describes limited waiver options. Do not assume an officiant can waive the wait in every situation. The same guidance says the license becomes invalid at midnight 30 days after issuance, so both the beginning and the end of the usable period matter.

Louisiana's state-run Orleans application guidance also calls for certified birth records and, where applicable, documents about an earlier marriage. Requirements connected with birthplace, translation or a missing birth record can need extra preparation. These are details of that application route, not a universal document list for our remote service. Keep the instructions attached to the process that supplied them.

If you choose Legal Online Marriage, work through the preparation in your account and use the license instructions provided for that ceremony. Do not independently obtain a Louisiana license expecting us to attach a remote ceremony to it. Tell the team if you have already collected documents or started a local application, especially if an earlier marriage or a document in another language is involved.

Your plans, made clearer

Give the documents as much attention as the wedding date

Create one folder for current identification, the exact legal names you use and any requested supporting records. Make a separate note of which instructions belong to a Louisiana ceremony and which belong to our service. This keeps a detailed local checklist from becoming a confusing mix of documents for two different applications.

A later reception can remain a Louisiana celebration even if the legal ceremony is arranged separately. Let anyone leading that event know whether you are already legally married. If you need proof for an employer or use abroad, identify the receiving organization's document requirements and allow for issuance and delivery. Authentication may help verify a document's origin, but it does not by itself decide whether every organization or country will accept the marriage for your intended purpose.

What to expect from the process

Prepare together

Explore your options, then use your account to complete your couple profile and the requested details. Follow the license instructions in your portal and upload the approved license when prompted.

Meet for a live ceremony

Choose an available appointment after the required preparation. You and your partner join by video with an officiant and two adult witnesses. We can provide the witnesses, or you can bring your own.

Choose document support

The $399 package includes the ceremony. The $899 package adds apostille authentication for your marriage certificate. Both have a separate government marriage license fee. An apostille authenticates a document; it does not guarantee acceptance.

Local requirements

Louisiana marriage rules to know

These details apply to a marriage license issued through the Louisiana local process. They are state-specific planning points, not requirements for the separate license used for our ceremony.

  • Louisiana 24-hour waiting period between license issuance and ceremony, with defined waiver possibilities.
  • License expires midnight 30 days after issuance.
  • Orleans application guidance asks for certified birth record and supporting documents for earlier marriages.

State rules reviewed: November 7, 2026. Confirm local requirements with the issuing office before applying.

Two different processes

Choose the route that fits your plans

A marriage license issued in Louisiana follows Louisiana rules. Our remote ceremony uses a separate application and ceremony process. The steps below explain what our service includes; they do not replace local requirements if you apply for a Louisiana license.

Questions from Louisiana couples

Can we assume Louisiana’s waiting period will be waived?

No. Official guidance describes specific waiver situations. A waiver is not a standard benefit to assume when arranging a local Louisiana ceremony, and those rules are separate from our remote-service process.

Should we use Louisiana’s birth-record checklist for your service?

Use the document instructions in your Legal Online Marriage account for our service. Louisiana’s local application requirements belong to its own licensing process. Ask about any record you cannot provide before you commit to a date.

Will our ceremony be recorded in Louisiana?

Not through this separate remote process. Your marriage record is held by the government authority that records the ceremony, rather than automatically by your home state. Keep the certified copy and confirm what the organization receiving it needs.

Can we join the ceremony from different places?

Yes. The ceremony is live by video, and both partners may join from the same room or separate locations. Everyone must be able to see and hear one another. Two adult witnesses attend, and witnesses are included if you need them.

Does this service issue a Louisiana marriage license?

No. The online ceremony follows the process described on our How it works page. The Louisiana rules above apply to couples choosing a local Louisiana license. These are separate routes, so do not treat a local application or a general course as a substitute for the process described on our How it works page.

How long does it take to get married online from Louisiana?

Your portal shows available appointment times and guides you through the application and identity checks. The government authority handles certificate processing after the ceremony; timing depends on that office.

Will every agency accept our marriage certificate?

Requirements depend on the office or organization receiving the certificate, and can differ for benefits, immigration matters or use outside the United States. Ask that office what record, certified copy, apostille or translation it needs before choosing a package.

Can we use a local clerk near New Orleans, Baton Rouge instead?

You can choose a local Louisiana license route, but local application and ceremony rules are separate from our remote process described on our How it works page. Contact the clerk or issuing office for the current requirements in the county or town where you plan to apply.
