Planning your marriage from Massachusetts

Online marriage in Massachusetts: get legally married from home

Massachusetts separates the notice of intention to marry from the license and the ceremony. Knowing those stages can help you compare a local wedding with a separate live online ceremony through Legal Online Marriage. This guide is for couples who want to understand the paperwork before arranging work leave, travel or a later reception. It does not treat a Massachusetts application as a starting form that can automatically be attached to any online wedding service you find.

Two different ways to plan

The notice of intention starts the Massachusetts route

Massachusetts guidance says couples apply together in person using a Notice of Intention of Marriage. You can apply in any Massachusetts city or town; it does not have to be the place where you live or hold the ceremony. The local route has a three-day waiting period before the marriage license can be collected.

The state describes a court process for asking to waive that waiting period. An application for a waiver is a separate request, not something a couple can simply choose in an online form. A Massachusetts license is valid for 60 days. If a local wedding is your plan, confirm the issued dates before coordinating an officiant, a venue and guests.

Legal Online Marriage is a separate remote ceremony service. Use the license guidance in your account if you choose our process, rather than obtaining a Massachusetts license because you live nearby. If you already filed a notice of intention or received a license, explain that when you contact the team. It is better to understand the next step than to duplicate an application that belongs to a different ceremony.

Your plans, made clearer

Consider the certificate and your name plans early

Massachusetts asks applicants about the name they intend to use after marriage. For any marriage route, take time to enter current legal information carefully and understand what the resulting record will show. Do not assume that choosing a name on an application updates every identity document, account or employer record for you.

If you are planning a later celebration in Massachusetts, keep the legal date and the event date clear on your private planning checklist. Let the person leading the later event know whether the marriage is already complete. After the legal ceremony, use the document requirements of each receiving organization when updating records. A requested certified certificate is different from a ceremony video or a decorative keepsake, and international use may involve additional authentication or translation steps.

What to expect from the process

Prepare together

Explore your options, then use your account to complete your couple profile and the requested details. Follow the license instructions in your portal and upload the approved license when prompted.

Meet for a live ceremony

Choose an available appointment after the required preparation. You and your partner join by video with an officiant and two adult witnesses. We can provide the witnesses, or you can bring your own.

Choose document support

The $399 package includes the ceremony. The $899 package adds apostille authentication for your marriage certificate. Both have a separate government marriage license fee. An apostille authenticates a document; it does not guarantee acceptance.

Local requirements

Massachusetts marriage rules to know

These details apply to a marriage license issued through the Massachusetts local process. They are state-specific planning points, not requirements for the separate license used for our ceremony.

  • Local license application uses in-person Notice of Intention of Marriage.
  • Three-day wait, judicial waiver process.
  • Massachusetts license valid 60 days; apply in any city or town.
  • Court application available to seek waiver of normal three-day waiting period.

Two different processes

Choose the route that fits your plans

A marriage license issued in Massachusetts follows Massachusetts rules. Our remote ceremony uses a separate application and ceremony process. The steps below explain what our service includes; they do not replace local requirements if you apply for a Massachusetts license.

Questions from Massachusetts couples

Must a Massachusetts application be filed where we live?

State guidance says a license can be obtained from any Massachusetts city or town. That flexibility concerns the Massachusetts route and does not mean the license can automatically be used for our separate remote service.

Is the Massachusetts three-day wait optional?

There is a separate court process to request marriage without delay. Do not assume a waiver will be granted. Our service follows the timeline of its own licensing and preparation process instead.

Will our ceremony be recorded in Massachusetts?

Not through this separate remote process. Your marriage record is held by the government authority that records the ceremony, rather than automatically by your home state. Keep the certified copy and confirm what the organization receiving it needs.

Can we join the ceremony from different places?

Yes. The ceremony is live by video, and both partners may join from the same room or separate locations. Everyone must be able to see and hear one another. Two adult witnesses attend, and witnesses are included if you need them.

Does this service issue a Massachusetts marriage license?

No. The online ceremony follows the process described on our How it works page. The Massachusetts rules above apply to couples choosing a local Massachusetts license. These are separate routes, so do not treat a local application or a general course as a substitute for the process described on our How it works page.

How long does it take to get married online from Massachusetts?

Your portal shows available appointment times and guides you through the application and identity checks. The government authority handles certificate processing after the ceremony; timing depends on that office.

Will every agency accept our marriage certificate?

Requirements depend on the office or organization receiving the certificate, and can differ for benefits, immigration matters or use outside the United States. Ask that office what record, certified copy, apostille or translation it needs before choosing a package.

Can we use a local clerk near Boston, Worcester instead?

You can choose a local Massachusetts license route, but local application and ceremony rules are separate from our remote process described on our How it works page. Contact the clerk or issuing office for the current requirements in the county or town where you plan to apply.
