Planning your marriage from Michigan

Online marriage in Michigan: get legally married from home

Michigan's license clock is tied to the application date, a detail that matters when you are trying to fit marriage around a busy month. If you are exploring an online ceremony, first choose whether you want a Michigan-issued license for the local process or Legal Online Marriage's separate remote service. These are different routes. This guide helps you avoid preparing one set of paperwork while booking a ceremony that needs another, particularly when partners live apart or plans are still changing.

Two different ways to plan

Michigan’s deadline starts earlier than some couples expect

Michigan court guidance says a license is void unless the marriage takes place within 33 days after the application. Notice that this is measured from applying, not simply from the day you collect the document. For a local Michigan ceremony, keep the application date and the stated expiration date with your wedding plans.

The same court guidance distinguishes residents from nonresidents when deciding where to apply. If one partner lives in Michigan, the resident's location determines the appropriate application area. If neither partner is a Michigan resident, the ceremony location determines where to apply. A change in where you intend to marry can therefore matter even when both people have already organized their identification.

These Michigan requirements are not our remote-service application instructions. If you choose Legal Online Marriage, use the guided licensing process supplied for that ceremony. Do not assume a Michigan license can be uploaded as a substitute simply because the ceremony happens on a screen. If you already started a Michigan application, follow the portal guidance before starting another process.

Your plans, made clearer

Use a shared checklist when schedules do not line up

For a couple working opposite shifts, write down who will finish each preparation task and when you can both attend the live ceremony. Include your identification, the requested account information and the places from which you will join. A shared checklist is easier to follow than trying to reconstruct the plan from several messages.

If a later Michigan celebration is part of your plans, label it separately from the legal ceremony. Decide which date belongs on requests for official records, and make sure a symbolic event is not accidentally arranged as another legal wedding. After marriage, identify the certified document each organization needs, allow for delivery and use a reliable address. If your certificate will be used abroad, discuss authentication as a separate document question rather than assuming a domestic record answers every foreign requirement.

What to expect from the process

Prepare together

Explore your options, then use your account to complete your couple profile and the requested details. Follow the license instructions in your portal and upload the approved license when prompted.

Meet for a live ceremony

Choose an available appointment after the required preparation. You and your partner join by video with an officiant and two adult witnesses. We can provide the witnesses, or you can bring your own.

Choose document support

The $399 package includes the ceremony. The $899 package adds apostille authentication for your marriage certificate. Both have a separate government marriage license fee. An apostille authenticates a document; it does not guarantee acceptance.

Local requirements

Michigan marriage rules to know

These details apply to a marriage license issued through the Michigan local process. They are state-specific planning points, not requirements for the separate license used for our ceremony.

  • Michigan license void if no marriage within 33 days after application.
  • Resident licensing based on residence; nonresidents apply where ceremony occurs.

State rules reviewed: November 7, 2026. Confirm local requirements with the issuing office before applying.

Two different processes

Choose the route that fits your plans

A marriage license issued in Michigan follows Michigan rules. Our remote ceremony uses a separate application and ceremony process. The steps below explain what our service includes; they do not replace local requirements if you apply for a Michigan license.

Questions from Michigan couples

Does Michigan’s 33-day period start when we collect the license?

Michigan court guidance measures the 33 days from the application. Use the dates on your actual paperwork and confirm any uncertainty before a local ceremony.

We live outside Michigan but want a Michigan wedding. Does location matter?

Yes. Michigan guidance directs nonresidents to apply where the ceremony will take place. Our separate remote service has its own licensing process, so explain which type of ceremony you intend to arrange.

Will our ceremony be recorded in Michigan?

Not through this separate remote process. Your marriage record is held by the government authority that records the ceremony, rather than automatically by your home state. Keep the certified copy and confirm what the organization receiving it needs.

Can we join the ceremony from different places?

Yes. The ceremony is live by video, and both partners may join from the same room or separate locations. Everyone must be able to see and hear one another. Two adult witnesses attend, and witnesses are included if you need them.

Does this service issue a Michigan marriage license?

No. The online ceremony follows the process described on our How it works page. The Michigan rules above apply to couples choosing a local Michigan license. These are separate routes, so do not treat a local application or a general course as a substitute for the process described on our How it works page.

How long does it take to get married online from Michigan?

Your portal shows available appointment times and guides you through the application and identity checks. The government authority handles certificate processing after the ceremony; timing depends on that office.

Will every agency accept our marriage certificate?

Requirements depend on the office or organization receiving the certificate, and can differ for benefits, immigration matters or use outside the United States. Ask that office what record, certified copy, apostille or translation it needs before choosing a package.

Can we use a local clerk near Detroit, Grand Rapids instead?

You can choose a local Michigan license route, but local application and ceremony rules are separate from our remote process described on our How it works page. Contact the clerk or issuing office for the current requirements in the county or town where you plan to apply.
