Planning your marriage from North Carolina

Online marriage in North Carolina: get legally married from home

North Carolina couples often need to plan not just for the two partners and an officiant, but also for two witnesses. If finding a shared place and time is difficult, our online service offers a different process to explore. It should not be confused with taking a North Carolina license onto an ordinary video call. Begin with the route you intend to use, then prepare the people, documents and live participation that belong to it. A clear plan can make an intimate ceremony easier to organize.

Two different ways to plan

The local ceremony needs witnesses as well as a license

North Carolina's local marriage process requires a license before the ceremony. The state has no required waiting period after issuance, and an unused license expires after 60 days. That window is useful when planning a wedding, but it does not remove the need to arrange the ceremony and the people who will take part.

At least two witnesses must sign the North Carolina marriage license after the ceremony, and the ceremony must be conducted by a recognized officiant. An online application may save information-entry time, but the state's judicial guidance says couples generally still visit in person for the license. Completing a local form online should not be read as permission to conduct the entire local wedding remotely.

Our service uses its own license and a live remote ceremony with an authorized officiant and two adult witnesses. Witnesses may join through the remote process, and the service can provide them if needed under the package instructions. Do not ask witnesses to sign documents from a North Carolina application unless you are actually following that separate local route.

Your plans, made clearer

Give witnesses a clear role before the day

If you bring witnesses to an online ceremony, make sure they know the appointment time, how they will join and any information requested before the call. Let the team know whether everyone will be together or participating from different places. A person invited to watch as a guest is not automatically the person assigned to complete required witness tasks. Confirm who is doing what while there is still time to prepare.

For the local route, the license and ceremony must fit within the 60-day window. For our service, use the instructions and dates in your account instead. In either case, keep proof of any previous marriage ending ready if requested, check names against identification and plan how the official certificate will be used afterward. A completed ceremony is one milestone; the recorded document needed by an employer or another office is a different part of the plan.

What to expect from the process

Prepare together

Explore your options, then use your account to complete your couple profile and the requested details. Follow the license instructions in your portal and upload the approved license when prompted.

Meet for a live ceremony

Choose an available appointment after the required preparation. You and your partner join by video with an officiant and two adult witnesses. We can provide the witnesses, or you can bring your own.

Choose document support

The $399 package includes the ceremony. The $899 package adds apostille authentication for your marriage certificate. Both have a separate government marriage license fee. An apostille authenticates a document; it does not guarantee acceptance.

  • The license is valid for 60 days.
  • The ceremony requires two witnesses, and applicants generally visit the register of deeds to complete the local process.

Questions from North Carolina couples

Does a North Carolina online application create a remote wedding?

No. The judicial guidance distinguishes an online application from the local license visit and the ceremony. Our service follows a separate remote-marriage process.

How many witnesses are needed for a North Carolina ceremony?

The local ceremony requires at least two witnesses to sign afterward. Our remote service also uses two adult witnesses, with participation arranged under its own instructions.

Will our ceremony be recorded in North Carolina?

Not through this separate remote process. Your marriage record is held by the government authority that records the ceremony, rather than automatically by your home state. Keep the certified copy and confirm what the organization receiving it needs.

Can we join the ceremony from different places?

Yes. The ceremony is live by video, and both partners may join from the same room or separate locations. Everyone must be able to see and hear one another. Two adult witnesses attend, and witnesses are included if you need them.

Does this service issue a North Carolina marriage license?

No. The online ceremony follows the process described on our How it works page. The North Carolina rules above apply to couples choosing a local North Carolina license. These are separate routes, so do not treat a local application or a general course as a substitute for the process described on our How it works page.

How long does it take to get married online from North Carolina?

Your portal shows available appointment times and guides you through the application and identity checks. The government authority handles certificate processing after the ceremony; timing depends on that office.

Will every agency accept our marriage certificate?

Requirements depend on the office or organization receiving the certificate, and can differ for benefits, immigration matters or use outside the United States. Ask that office what record, certified copy, apostille or translation it needs before choosing a package.

Can we use a local clerk near Charlotte, Raleigh instead?

You can choose a local North Carolina license route, but local application and ceremony rules are separate from our remote process described on our How it works page. Contact the clerk or issuing office for the current requirements in the county or town where you plan to apply.
