Planning your marriage from North Dakota
In North Dakota, getting a license and getting married are two separate events. That distinction is especially useful when a couple is trying to fit the legal steps around travel, work or time apart. Our online service is a different route from the state's local license-and-ceremony process. Before applying, decide where the legal ceremony belongs in your plan and how you will obtain the official certificate afterward. You can then prepare the correct documents without treating an application confirmation as the final step.

Two different ways to plan
A North Dakota marriage license must be used within 60 days. Local guidance explains that there is no waiting period, but the issued license is permission for a marriage, not the marriage itself. A ceremony with an officiant and two witnesses still needs to take place. If you are arranging a local wedding, keep the license deadline visible alongside the ceremony date.
North Dakota licenses can be used for a ceremony anywhere within the state. Local application instructions may allow information to be entered online while still requiring both applicants to appear when applying in person or picking up the license. Those practical steps matter when a partner is away. Do not assume an electronic form removes the need to complete the local issuance process.
Our service uses a different licensing process designed for the live remote ceremony. Tell the team if you have already applied in North Dakota rather than uploading a local license as though it were the required online-service document. The correct route should connect the application, the officiant, the witnesses and the record that is filed afterward.
Your plans, made clearer
For a local North Dakota wedding, do not assume a certified copy automatically arrives after the ceremony. Published local guidance says copies must be requested and paid for separately. This is a good reason to ask what happens after the signed documents are returned. A keepsake from the ceremony is not necessarily the official record an employer, bank or other organization will accept. Save the document request confirmation with your marriage records.
For our online route, follow the certificate instructions for that process and keep your delivery information current. If you will use your own witnesses, tell them how and when to join the live call. If each partner will participate from a different location, confirm both local times and test the connection before the appointment. Put the legal ceremony, document request and any later celebration in separate calendar entries so each gets the preparation it needs.

Choose an available appointment after the required preparation. You and your partner join by video with an officiant and two adult witnesses. We can provide the witnesses, or you can bring your own.
The $399 package includes the ceremony. The $899 package adds apostille authentication for your marriage certificate. Both have a separate government marriage license fee. An apostille authenticates a document; it does not guarantee acceptance.

Local requirements
These details apply to a marriage license issued through the North Dakota local process. They are state-specific planning points, not requirements for the separate license used for our ceremony.
State rules reviewed: November 7, 2026. Confirm local requirements with the issuing office before applying.
Two different processes
A marriage license issued in North Dakota follows North Dakota rules. Our remote ceremony uses a separate application and ceremony process. The steps below explain what our service includes; they do not replace local requirements if you apply for a North Dakota license.
| Question | A local North Dakota license | Our live online ceremony |
|---|---|---|
| Which license applies? | The license is issued by the local North Dakota authority. Use the waiting-period, validity and filing information in this guide, and confirm local details with the issuing office. | The ceremony follows the process described on our How it works page and uses a license for that process. It is not a North Dakota-issued license. |
| Where does the ceremony happen? | Follow the location and ceremony rules that apply to the specific North Dakota license. | You and your partner join a live video ceremony with an authorized officiant. You may join from the same room or separate locations. |
| What about witnesses? | Witness rules can depend on the local route and license type. Confirm them with the issuing authority. | Two adult witnesses attend. Witnesses are included if you need them; let the team know before your appointment. |
| Who records the marriage? | The office that issued the local license receives the completed return under its process. | The officiant submits the required marriage paperwork. Follow the clerk’s instructions for obtaining your official certificate. |

Planning from around North Dakota
Whether you are planning from Fargo, Bismarck, Grand Forks, the online ceremony can be joined from different locations. If you choose a local North Dakota license, check the issuing county or town office for its current application, appointment and ceremony steps. Local offices may have their own forms and scheduling details.
Before your next step
No. Official local guidance explains that an officiant-led ceremony with two witnesses is still needed. The license must be used within 60 days.
Do not assume so. Current local instructions require a separate request and payment. Follow the certificate instructions for the marriage process you choose.
Not through this separate remote process. Your marriage record is held by the government authority that records the ceremony, rather than automatically by your home state. Keep the certified copy and confirm what the organization receiving it needs.
Yes. The ceremony is live by video, and both partners may join from the same room or separate locations. Everyone must be able to see and hear one another. Two adult witnesses attend, and witnesses are included if you need them.
No. The online ceremony follows the process described on our How it works page. The North Dakota rules above apply to couples choosing a local North Dakota license. These are separate routes, so do not treat a local application or a general course as a substitute for the process described on our How it works page.
Your portal shows available appointment times and guides you through the application and identity checks. The government authority handles certificate processing after the ceremony; timing depends on that office.
Requirements depend on the office or organization receiving the certificate, and can differ for benefits, immigration matters or use outside the United States. Ask that office what record, certified copy, apostille or translation it needs before choosing a package.
You can choose a local North Dakota license route, but local application and ceremony rules are separate from our remote process described on our How it works page. Contact the clerk or issuing office for the current requirements in the county or town where you plan to apply.
