Planning your marriage from Virginia

Online marriage in Virginia: get legally married from home

Virginia’s local marriage route can suit residents and visitors, but a marriage license is not the same as a ceremony booking. Our service offers a separate digitally guided route to a live online ceremony. If you are comparing options from Virginia, think about where you and your partner can participate, who will lead the ceremony and which license applies. Having a clear plan matters more than choosing whichever application appears first in a search. This guide helps you keep those choices separate.

Two different ways to plan

A local license has a place and a validity window

Virginia does not require residency to obtain its local marriage license. Once issued, the license has no waiting period, and it is valid for 60 calendar days. The local ceremony must take place in Virginia. These are rules for that license, not a statement that an application appointment itself performs the marriage.

If you choose the Virginia route, arrange an appropriately authorized officiant and make sure the ceremony falls within the license’s usable dates. Ask about application procedures before arriving, especially if one partner is traveling. No waiting period does not guarantee that every office appointment or ceremony service is available on demand.

Our online ceremony does not use Virginia residency as the basis for its license. It follows a separate process with instructions in your guided account. If you already obtained a Virginia license, follow the portal guidance before starting another application. Do not arrange a remote ceremony on the assumption that any license can be used anywhere.

Your plans, made clearer

Treat travel and ceremony attendance as different decisions

A couple with one partner away for work or service may find that the challenge is being in the same place, not obtaining a local license. Write down the commitments for each option: any office visit, travel, officiant arrangements and the ceremony itself. Compare those tasks with the guided online experience, where both partners prepare and participate live from their permitted locations.

Keep the certificate’s intended use in view. A local benefits office, employer or other organization may ask for a certified record rather than a recording of the call or an application confirmation. Plan the official document step separately from your ceremony date. For uses abroad, the receiving authority determines its own document and recognition requirements. Authentication can support a document’s use but does not decide every legal question about the marriage. Keep a short written list of what your chosen route includes so neither partner mistakes a license appointment for the marriage itself.

What to expect from the process

Prepare together

Explore your options, then use your account to complete your couple profile and the requested details. Follow the license instructions in your portal and upload the approved license when prompted.

Meet for a live ceremony

Choose an available appointment after the required preparation. You and your partner join by video with an officiant and two adult witnesses. We can provide the witnesses, or you can bring your own.

Choose document support

The $399 package includes the ceremony. The $899 package adds apostille authentication for your marriage certificate. Both have a separate government marriage license fee. An apostille authenticates a document; it does not guarantee acceptance.

Local requirements

Virginia marriage rules to know

These details apply to a marriage license issued through the Virginia local process. They are state-specific planning points, not requirements for the separate license used for our ceremony.

  • Virginia residency is not required to obtain a Virginia license.
  • There is no waiting period after issuance. The license is valid for 60 calendar days.
  • The local ceremony must take place in Virginia.

State rules reviewed: November 7, 2026. Confirm local requirements with the issuing office before applying.

Two different processes

Choose the route that fits your plans

A marriage license issued in Virginia follows Virginia rules. Our remote ceremony uses a separate application and ceremony process. The steps below explain what our service includes; they do not replace local requirements if you apply for a Virginia license.

Questions from Virginia couples

Can nonresidents use Virginia’s local marriage process?

Virginia does not require residency for its license. The local license still has to be used for a ceremony in Virginia and within its valid period.

Does no waiting period mean your ceremony is immediate?

No. Virginia’s local waiting-period rule does not describe our package availability. Our service has separate preparation and scheduling steps.

Will our ceremony be recorded in Virginia?

Not through this separate remote process. Your marriage record is held by the government authority that records the ceremony, rather than automatically by your home state. Keep the certified copy and confirm what the organization receiving it needs.

Can we join the ceremony from different places?

Yes. The ceremony is live by video, and both partners may join from the same room or separate locations. Everyone must be able to see and hear one another. Two adult witnesses attend, and witnesses are included if you need them.

Does this service issue a Virginia marriage license?

No. The online ceremony follows the process described on our How it works page. The Virginia rules above apply to couples choosing a local Virginia license. These are separate routes, so do not treat a local application or a general course as a substitute for the process described on our How it works page.

How long does it take to get married online from Virginia?

Your portal shows available appointment times and guides you through the application and identity checks. The government authority handles certificate processing after the ceremony; timing depends on that office.

Will every agency accept our marriage certificate?

Requirements depend on the office or organization receiving the certificate, and can differ for benefits, immigration matters or use outside the United States. Ask that office what record, certified copy, apostille or translation it needs before choosing a package.

Can we use a local clerk near Virginia Beach, Richmond instead?

You can choose a local Virginia license route, but local application and ceremony rules are separate from our remote process described on our How it works page. Contact the clerk or issuing office for the current requirements in the county or town where you plan to apply.
