Planning your marriage from West Virginia

Online marriage in West Virginia: get legally married from home

West Virginia couples may want an intimate local wedding, a ceremony while a partner is away, or a legal marriage before a later family gathering. Start by choosing the route that fits those plans. West Virginia’s own license has a validity window and a return process after the ceremony. Our remote service follows a separate licensing process with digital guidance and a live officiant. It is important to know which process you are following before signing forms or paying for arrangements.

Two different ways to plan

The local process continues after the ceremony

Under West Virginia law, an unused local marriage license becomes void 60 days after issuance. The person who performs the marriage also completes the endorsement and returns the original document for recording. Receiving a license and completing the ceremony therefore do not finish every document step.

For a local wedding, ask who will return the original and how you can obtain the recorded certificate afterward. Keep a note of the ceremony date and the process you used. If plans move beyond the license’s valid window, address that before the ceremony rather than relying on a later correction.

For our online service, the officiant and licensing route are part of a different process. Follow your account’s preparation and certificate guidance instead of obtaining a West Virginia license simply because you live there. If you already have local paperwork, follow the portal guidance for the process you are completing.

Your plans, made clearer

Build your plan around participation and the record

Living far from a partner or facing a difficult trip can change which ceremony route feels manageable. Compare the full list of tasks, including any required visits and your ability to attend together. Our digitally guided experience leads to a live call, so each partner still needs to complete the required preparation and participate. Plan the connection, sound and witness arrangements rather than assuming the account setup itself completes the marriage.

Afterward, make the certificate part of your practical next-step list. Ask the organization that will receive it whether it needs a certified copy and which details it checks. Do not send an application confirmation when a completed marriage record is required. If you are planning a celebration at home later, keep that event separate from the document timeline so family plans do not depend on an unconfirmed delivery date. If someone else is helping organize the day, make sure they also understand who is handling the official record and which process is being used.

What to expect from the process

Prepare together

Explore your options, then use your account to complete your couple profile and the requested details. Follow the license instructions in your portal and upload the approved license when prompted.

Meet for a live ceremony

Choose an available appointment after the required preparation. You and your partner join by video with an officiant and two adult witnesses. We can provide the witnesses, or you can bring your own.

Choose document support

The $399 package includes the ceremony. The $899 package adds apostille authentication for your marriage certificate. Both have a separate government marriage license fee. An apostille authenticates a document; it does not guarantee acceptance.

Local requirements

West Virginia marriage rules to know

These details apply to a marriage license issued through the West Virginia local process. They are state-specific planning points, not requirements for the separate license used for our ceremony.

  • A West Virginia marriage license becomes void if it is not used within 60 days.
  • The officiant must endorse and return the original license after the ceremony.

State rules reviewed: November 7, 2026. Confirm local requirements with the issuing office before applying.

Two different processes

Choose the route that fits your plans

A marriage license issued in West Virginia follows West Virginia rules. Our remote ceremony uses a separate application and ceremony process. The steps below explain what our service includes; they do not replace local requirements if you apply for a West Virginia license.

Questions from West Virginia couples

Does a West Virginia license last indefinitely if we delay?

No. State law says the local license becomes void if the marriage is not performed within 60 days of issuance.

Who records the marriage after an online ceremony?

Our ceremony follows its own filing process. The instructions for your certificate come from that process, rather than from your state of residence.

Will our ceremony be recorded in West Virginia?

Not through this separate remote process. Your marriage record is held by the government authority that records the ceremony, rather than automatically by your home state. Keep the certified copy and confirm what the organization receiving it needs.

Can we join the ceremony from different places?

Yes. The ceremony is live by video, and both partners may join from the same room or separate locations. Everyone must be able to see and hear one another. Two adult witnesses attend, and witnesses are included if you need them.

Does this service issue a West Virginia marriage license?

No. The online ceremony follows the process described on our How it works page. The West Virginia rules above apply to couples choosing a local West Virginia license. These are separate routes, so do not treat a local application or a general course as a substitute for the process described on our How it works page.

How long does it take to get married online from West Virginia?

Your portal shows available appointment times and guides you through the application and identity checks. The government authority handles certificate processing after the ceremony; timing depends on that office.

Will every agency accept our marriage certificate?

Requirements depend on the office or organization receiving the certificate, and can differ for benefits, immigration matters or use outside the United States. Ask that office what record, certified copy, apostille or translation it needs before choosing a package.

Can we use a local clerk near Charleston, Morgantown instead?

You can choose a local West Virginia license route, but local application and ceremony rules are separate from our remote process described on our How it works page. Contact the clerk or issuing office for the current requirements in the county or town where you plan to apply.
